I've been thinking about my dad a lot lately and how monumentally blessed I am to have him. He's taught me so much and been there for me when no one else was.
By the time I was 8 I knew how to disarm and take down a full grown man. When I started dating he was there to tell me what boys wanted, even though I didn't listen, and help me navigate the opposite sex. In high school when my boyfriend dumped me and I walked down the hall, dropped the phone, and started to collapse in tears, I landed not on the ground, but in my dad's arms.
When I was diagnosed with Crohn's and spent 9 months in the hospital, my dad paid every bill at my place, and with the help of my best friend Bridget, took care of my child and gave him great holidays even though mommy wasn't there. I was able to come home to my own house and car, after not paying for months because of him.
When I brought a girl home to meet him and told him I was a lesbian, he was welcoming and encouraging. He knew that I wasn't, I was just young and angry at men, but even if I had been he would have accepted that.
Soon my son and I will be able to spend as much time as we want with my dad, after being away from home for 6 long years. I'm so excited to have Carl learn from such a great man. He's a wonderful example of unconditionally loving your children, of teaching and showing them values and morals.
One day I hope to look back and see that I was at least half as good a parent as he was to me.
